“What would you do if you hit the lottery?”
I’ve been asked or asked myself that question a lot over the years. Daydreaming about what I’d do with my life if I had a lump sum of money handed to me. The one thing that I’ve always let my mind drift to when I think about this is opening a little store. Not just any store though. It would be part comic book shop and part record store. Why those two things? It’s simple: they are two of the things that I love the most in life.
I have had a love for music for as long as I can remember. It seems to flow through my veins. I have many family members who have been involved with music. Hell, even I gave it a shot at one point. I’ve collected and listened to music from a very small age. I’ve loved everything from Michael Jackson to Van Halen to Sarah McLachlan to Warren G to Soundgarden to Dredg to Glassjaw to Lamb of God. No matter what changes I go through in life there is always one constant: my love for music. I’ve always loved to talk music with anybody who would listen and even sometimes to those that wouldn’t.
Comic books have been a love of mine for almost as long. Some of my earliest memories are of my Mom reading me the mini comics that came with my Masters of the Universe action figures. I thrilled to the adventures of He-Man and his many friends and foes. Then my Grandpa started to buy me random comics from the local newsstand. Sometimes he would bring me Transformers, Superman, or Batman. As I grew older I found a love for other heroes like Spiderman, the X-Men, Captain America, Green Lantern, and many others. Along with Star Wars, comics fueled my imagination as a child and into adulthood. It wasn’t always fashionable to love comics so, often, it was hard to find like-minded folks that shared the love for the medium. However, I made a few friends along the way that shared my likes but I emphasize few. Oh how the world has changed in the last 20 years.
It seems that all things geek culture have taken over. Comic book based movies flow with abundance. It has become en vogue to love being a geek. It’s become cool to wear a comic book t-shirt or discuss your favorite super heroes and villains. What a time to be alive!
So, that brings me back around to the purpose of Music and Comics. If I had the money, I would open up my own little slice of heaven. Sell some records and comic books and talk with other lovers of the mediums all day long. However, since all of that is only a pipe dream at this point, this little slice of the internet will be that haven.
